It doesn't have to be a DATE-date for Jimmy and Darcy to spend time together; sometimes it's good to just share company, whatever else they may be doing. Hence, meeting up today in one of the smaller study rooms of the New York Public Library. Jimmy doesn't have to cram — he's been good at spacing out his medical study — but he does have to keep up with it. The finals for the summer semester are coming up. But he balances his attention between the books and the woman, even if it's just laying a hand on her back or giving her a smile between paragraphs.

Darcy's brought her phone and her charger and her earbuds, content to keep the boyfriend company while NOT chattering randomly. Of course, Darcy's idea of not bugging him means sitting next to him as close as she can manage, her legs tossed over his lap. Some times she spots the smile, some times she doesn't, and when she doesn't the amusement of the video she's watching can be felt. When it's spotted, she seems to be waiting for something but not wanting to interrupt. She smiles back, but when Jimmy goes back to the books, Darcy looks back at her video and back to contently waiting.

The shared amusement brings a smile to Jimmy's face, too, even though he doesn't see the video itself. But that waiting look, that draws more attention. He contemplates it in the back of his mind, while his hand lays idly on her knee. The next time he catches her eye, he takes a 'best guess' and gives her a quick peck of a kiss. Is that what she's waiting for? Even if not, it's a nice thing to share.

It wasn't, but the kiss was very much welcomed. Darcy leaned into the quick peck before settling back with a grin. New video queued up to watch, her emotions flickering micro expressions across her face.

Jimmy can tell he hadn't hit the mark. He sets his pencil down — seriously, he takes physical notes instead of typing things — and keeps his eyes on her face. "What's on your mind?"

When she spots his pencil being set down, Darcy pauses her video and pulls out an ear bud as Jimmy speaks.

"Hmm? Oh. Nothing. Just hoping I'm not being a bother," she says, a touch of worried about it.

Jimmy shakes his head, his arm slipping more fully around her. "Never at all. I invited you, remember; I want you here. I just hope I'm not being too boring with all the focus on the books."

Darcy smiles, shifting to lean into his arm. Pleased comfort bubbles up within her.

"No. Not boring at all. I'm enjoying sitting with you. You doing your thing. Me doing mine. I'll annoy you for your full attention after you're done studying… or I run out of new vids on my subscriptions," Darcy teases, grinning with a wink.

Jimmy grins. "Aah. That's always a terrible thing, to run out of Internet." He kisses her forehead. "I assure you, girlfriend, you're not a bother. I like having you with me, even if we're just… essentially 'being alone', together. Me studying, you on your phone. Things we could each do on our own, but we're doing them… together."

"We're hanging out in each other's bubbles, and we don't need much more than that," Darcy agrees, nodding as a warm comfortbale contentment settles into her.

"So, go back to your bubble of books. I'll go back to my bubble of Alternate History, and when you're ready for a brain break, we'll go get some food."

Jimmy squeezes around her shoulders. "Alternate History?" He keeps an ear on her answer, while his eyes go back to the books. Up the pencil goes again.

"Mm-hmm.. One of my favorite channels. They take some point in history and theorize what happens if it worked out different. Like, What if Napoleon never came to power? or What if the US never existed? Pretty dope shit," replies Darcy, head tipping side to side. "After this one, I've got a new vid from Eons. Something about cannibalistic dinos. Sounds whack, so I'm curious."

Jimmy huhs, while scribbling another note. "Or, what if the Napoleonic Wars had dragons? Or is it more of a down-to-earth kind of analysis, rather than bringing the fantastical elements in?"

Dragons? Clearly surprised by it, the answer is apparent before she says it.

"It's a realistic what-if analysis of human historical events," she says, lips a little pursed as she considers the possibility. "Where would they even GET dragons?"

Jimmy pokes out his tongue. "I dunno, maybe somewhere adjacent to where we get angels?" 'Down to earth' is an uncertain position when you have superheroes flying through the sky on a regular basis.

Darcy opens her mouth, then considers his point. A few seconds later, she closes her mouth again and huffs faintly.

"Fair point. I'll have to leave that suggestion in the comments," she states, grinning mischeivously now as she composes a snarky way to pose that question.

Jimmy gives her a prim, proper, not at all smug kind of smile. "Though having the more, er, 'normal' analysis does sound interesting. Send me a link, I'll check it out later?" He looks back down to the book. Most of the way through the chapter now, and he thinks he's absorbing things okay.

"Sure," is agreed easily, and Darcy tucks the earbud back into her ear, taking a few moments to send Jimmy the link before returning back to the video she had been watching.

Jimmy squeezes her around the shoulders, a hug of gratitude. He's still present with her, even while he reads; and a couple of minutes later, there's a shift in his focus. He pulls out a print-out of assigned questions, and starts scribbling down his answers, working just from memory.

The shift has Darcy glancing up, but when it's clear that he's just shifted to making sure it's in his memory, she turns to her videos. The squeeze is leaned into again, and her head shifts to brush her lips against his forearm near her.

Jimmy sighs happily from that kiss, even just a simple soft thing. It soothes him, though there's still that hint of nervousness as he starts actually checking them… then he relaxes with a smile as he settles back. "Got a preganglionic fiber confused with a postganglionic nerve, but other than that, I'm doing well."

"Did you?" Darcy asks, having gotten the earbud free in time to hear ….whatever those words were. She has NO idea, but smirks anyway.

"Well. don't do that."

Jimmy snickers and kisses her forehead. "Yeah, yeah. I won't in future." So he may yet get to be valedictorian of his Starfleet Academy class! "So… you said we should go get something to eat once I was done here?"

Darcy nods, smiling and pausing the video.

"Does that mean you're done and ready for noms?" she asks, a little hopeful but willing to wait more if he needs.

Jimmy gives her forehead another peck. "I am indeed ready for noms." He then goes briefly tense. Under most circumstances, she'd take an opening like that as an invitation to bite him.

His empathy does indeed warn him of the knee jerk thought her mind comes up with in that opening. She smiles, the mischief gleaming in her eyes, before she pulls her legs from his lap and lean in to kiss his cheek.

"Awesome. Let's go eat. But save room for dessert." There is absolutely no need for empathy to hear the innuendo in THAT remark.
