Atlantis. The shining jewel of the Oceans. The place that RUNS the oceans…with the King being the Emperor of the Deep.
King Namor was exiting the throne room and swimming into a rather large meeting with many of his advisors being present. Clearly, Atlanteans strongly dislike the surface world, and many advisors (including military) suggest appropriate military action in reprimand for all the harm that the surface has done to Atlantis, albeit inadvertantly, and the oceans in which they dwell.
Looking rather irritated, Namor sends one of the servants to bring Lady Mera to his quarters while he dismissed this meeting.
For he knew that she cared about the surface, in her own way, and wanted to speak with her. If, and its a BIG IF, she was in the running to perhaps one day be his queen, he wanted to let her know that her opinion and words was wanted and welcome in the King's eyes.
Mera answers the royal summons as quickly as is able - she would never tarry where the King is involved. He will knock and then wait before swimming inside and bowing to her sovereign. "You wished to see me, Your Highness?" She knew about the meeting and wasn't even bothered she had not been invited, but its proximity to the request for her presence suggests it was not a good meeting.
Namor hears the knock and he nods. "Enter." and when Mera arrives and bows, he lifts a hand suggesting that she can assume a relaxed stance however she chooses. "I did, Lady Mera. As you likely know, I was pulled into a meeting with my advisors, and many of them seek some form of military action against the Surface World. They are right in many aspects: they pollute our waters, they infest their trash and their unwanted items in our oceans, they endanger the sea life within it, while we have given no danger to the surface by existing as they have to us." he lets her think on his words.
"You have made friends on the surface, and you have explored New York City to see what they are like. I ask you then as a King seeking the wisdom of his courter, what do you think should be done?"
Mera quietly listens to Namor's words. No change in her expression as she absorbs the information. "The humans have been doing this for centuries, My King, any particular reason we wish to attack them now? If anything, they are slowly becoming better in their ways." A pause before she admits. "Very slowly. Though some nations are better than others. And the devastation caused by war would be much worse."
Mera purses her lips. "We would win of course but it would be a bloody, destructive conflict. And with the lunatics running the human world at the moment, they would destroy the world rather than come to an honorable peace. Friends?" She has to consider that for a moment. "They are not all bad, My Lord, just as not all Atlanteans are good."
Namor looks at Mera as she seems to answer rather…wisely actually. "I've noticed my advisors seem to want this war. While I don't see a war with the surface favorable under any circumstance, even though I know for a fact we would win, I'm not keen on sacrificing Atlantean lives just so we can be rid of life on the surface." Namor seems more than happy to leave the humans to destroy themselves.
"And you are right…they will likely already destroy themselves." he shakes his head. Though the statement 'not all atlanteans are good' makes him think of renegades like Attuma, who are always trying to cause harm to Atlantis and her people.
"This is one of the many reasons why I firmly dislike politics. I told my advisors the same thing I tell you now." Then…why would he bring her here?
Mera is pleased she said the 'right' thing. Namor is not the kind to hide displeasure to anything being said to him - just ask his advisors. "We should ensure that they do not launch their weapons of mass destruction" she adds. "The radiation will pollute the oceans even more than plastic. They will destroy each other but we must not go with them."
Mera allows herself the faintest flicker of a smile at Namor's dislike of politics. "A king must do much that he does not like, to enable his people to survive. They love you for it."
Namor looks at Mera and he nods. "Indeed. If so much as one more drop of radiation arrives in my oceans, the screams of the criminal would never be heard." which speaks volumes of itself that Namor would be extremely displeased, and thats never a good sign for anybody. But he catches her smile. "I know they love me for it…and I love them as my people." there is nothing Namor wouldn't do for his Kingdom.
"But thank you, Lady Mera. If a King is to have a mate, they must often be of the same mind." He seemed to be testing how she thinks to make sure she wasn't aggressive in her thoughts like he was. She's a good foil for him. "Tell me more of your experience with the surface." he leaves his Trident and swims beside her.
"Sometimes, My King, the best partner is one that can offer different views, without it becoming insurmountable argument" Mera offers with appropriate humility. "The surface world is a strange and confusing one. There are very few kings that remain. Certainly not those with the power you command. Though that sometimes means they merely have a different title to hide their true nature. And because they must hide their nature, they rarely rule for their people…only for themselves."
The faintest of blushes at Namor's proximity before Mera clears her throat and stops acting like a nervous schoolgirl. "I hope you do not expect a mate to be nothing but a source of children. As your advisors have no doubt complained, I am a rather free spririted individual that loves her country."
Namor looks upon Mera as she offers him some more wisdom. He seems to appreciate her more…forward-thinking and freedom-centered views. But as she blushes at his presence and proximity and her hope that he sees more of her, he nods. "They have. Extravagantly, in fact. But as always, I care not. I expect you to be more than a carrier for an heir. You have a voice that matters to me because unlike the rest of the drabble who seek to improve their own status, you love Atlantis for what it is and what it can be."
Well then, possible points for Namor!
…who's closer to her.
"But I agree that you will likely have different views to mine. I acknowledge that many times I have a temper. You have a more calm spirit."
Angry wasps have a more calm spirit than Namor, but Mera certainly won't point that out. She's a redhead, her temper is hardly serene either. Though his flattery will get him everywhere. "You are kind, My King." She does her best to relax at his proximity but he is the king. It's all she can do to not bow and scrape. "If you can bear to listen to my voice without calling for my execution, then I am sure that we will have a long and fruitful relationship."
Namor is….certainly one who's wrath could cause maelstroms, no trident needed. Of course this is just a comparison to just how firey his tmeper is. And for Mera? He is more than happy to flatter her in every which way. "I simply speak the truth." he admits, perhaps turning his eyes away from her to hide his own blush. He makes the dare.
His hand reaches for her own then, turning to face her as she speaks of him refraining from executing her and just bearing to hear her voice, he seems to smile at her.
"There are many days where I would rather hear your voice than the crashing of the waves, Mera." which is a compliment in and of itself, and one that is romantic in its attempt.
"As well, I don't think I would ever wish such a thing on you. Besides, who else will calm my mind when it is riddled with the pitiful ambitions of politicians?"
Mera's hand is taken, her fingers gently squeezing Namor's. She looks quite surprised at such flattery…pleasantly surprised. And she would calm Namor's mind? The world is a crazy place.
"I don't know what to say, Your Majesty" Mera replies, her voice unusually shy and soft. It seems the romantic intention worked. But what to do now? She sucks on her lower lip for a moment, eyes cast down rather than to look upon the king. Then she kisses him. Proud and forthright Mera is back as she does such a scandalous thing with enthusiasm.
Namor looks at Mera. "Then say nothing." But before he could even say anything else, it seems as though Mera kisses him! Surprised for a brief moment, Namor lets his eyes draw shut as he kisses her passionately, a hand lifting to cup her cheek while the other lowers to wrap his arm around her waist, holding her close to him as he returned her affections.
Scandalous, but its not like Namor ever cared about how others thought about him….until Mera.
But he doesn't speak, nor does he break away from her. He does something he almost never does: he enjoys the moment.
Mera sinks into the kiss, the two of them floating in each other's arms. Lips parting. Tongues playing. The kind of public display of affection that would have those advisors exploding in fury. But it must stop at some point. Mera slowly pulling away, smiling demurely. That was quite the escalation. "My apologies" she whispers, nervously swallowing, her arms still around his neck. "Was there something else you wished to ask of me?"
What a kiss!
It even leaves Namor flustered for a moment as he looks Mera in the eyes, looking happy to just be there in her arms. "There's nothing to apologize for." He whispers back, where she is demure, he is confident. "The only question that comes to mind is 'will you stay'?" oh my.
"But, I feel as if we have been scandalous enough." he teases her. "…is there anything you would like to ask of me?" perhaps delaying the amount of time between being in Mera's arms and dismissing her from his summons.
Stay? Oh my, indeed. Before Mera can answer that question, Namor has dismissed it as a tease. She managed to avoid that scandal at least. A shake of her head. "No, Your Majesty, no questions from me. If that is all, then I should go." Though she makes no attempt at all to extricate herself from his arms or move her own.
Namor seems to smile at her as she speaks of leaving…but then doesn't. Namor though, sees this as a sign that she wants to stay (he could be wrong), and well….he won't debate her. He starts to float them deeper into his chambers…deeper into the web. "That would likely be wise…" but without another word, he kisses her again if she lets him.
It appears this might be a night of scandal in Atlantis after all.
Mera swims deeper into the bowels of the palace with Namor. No attempt to deny his kiss. Rather, she luxuriates in it. Holding him close, hands trailing over his body.
Yes, there will scandal tonight.
