The back lawn of the Xavier Institute gets used for a lot of things. Barbecues, martial arts training, lawn darts, lawn bowling, sunbathing, even "camping" if you call setting up a tent and sleeping fifteen feet away from the height of luxury camping. Don't knock it until you've tried it. Most fun you can have for under $30. Tonight though, it's being used for an entirely different purpose. See, Bobby likes to make things. And it's been a while since he's had a big open space to actually do stuff like this. And it's late in the evening and most of the kids are either in bed or watching television or playing the facebooks on their cellular telephones or whatever kids do these days. So Bobby has crafted a very large, very detailed chess set on the back lawn. The pieces are human-sized, and sculpted to look like your regular basic chess set, but made of ice. The pieces on the 'white' side are clear, while the 'black' side are opaque. Bobby is just putting the finishing touches on the 'black' king, using his powers to form the crown atop its head. Now, what to do with it?

*

Rogue had hung out with Remy for a while, watching a movie and playing it cool. Then she'd walked around the lake, listening to the fish rising at dusk for the insects, the crickets and frogs chorusing. She's had a couple things on her mind, lately, so as she heads back towards the mansion (and the garage), she sees Bobby and his giant chess board.

Hands in her pockets, bracing against the hint of chill that will come from that much ice. "I would have thought you more a checkers guy."

*

Bobby grins, hearing the voice coming up behind him, and turns to face Rogue. "I love checkers. But making a checkers set just didn't feel like enough of a challenge, you know?" He slides across the ice of the board, toward one of the knights, and adjusts its facing just so; everything needs to line up properly, you see. This isn't for playing with. How would anyone else move the pieces without freezing their little hands off? That done, he pulls his phone out of his pocket and lobs it toward Rogue without warning. Probably not smart, but here's hoping she's quick enough to catch it. Otherwise, here's hoping the grass below is soft enough to cushion its fall. "Frozen art is transitory at best. Take my picture!" He smiles wide, and moves to lean against the King he'd just finished.

*

"Lucky for you it's gettin' humid for summer. Gives ya something to work with, right?" She reaches out easily to snag his phone from the air, as if she'd had all the time in the world. She's a mean baseball player, how dare he doubt her.

She will take a couple of steps back to take several pictures of Bobby in rapid succession, to make sure he has at least one he will like.

*

"Definitely makes it easier. If it gets drier, I'll have to rein it in a bit," Bobby replies. Pictures taken, Bobby slides back across the board toward Rogue, stepping off the ice and onto the grass without missing a beat. "Thanks," he says, reclaiming his phone to sift through the pictures she'd just taken. He nods to himself as he swipes through, and then pockets the phone again when he's done. "Remind me to use a different spot next time. Don't wanna drown the grass in one place. What are you up to out here this late?"

*

"Use a different spot on the lawn next time, or you'll be out here replanting grass." She teases him with a smile. "I went for a walk around the lake. Needed to do some thinking." She shrugs, hands sliding back into her pockets.

*

"Yeah, nobody wants me doing the landscaping," Bobby says with a little chuckle. He moves to stand at Rogue's side, meaning to walk with her back toward the mansion. "I hear that's why the Professor had the lake installed," he jokes. "Anything serious? Anything I can help with?" He's not trying to be pushy, just trying to be helpful, making the offer if she wants to talk about things.

*

"No, just.. I was wondering if the Professor might let me build something, on the far side of the lake. I love you, and the school has been home more than not since I was brought here. But part of me doesn't want to live crammed close in. I mean, just a small cabin on the far end of the lake, where the wood take over? Just for some privacy and safety for me, and everyone else." There's a smirk.

*

Bobby gives a nod. He doesn't mind being in a room in the mansion, but that's him; he's never really had a problem being among people. There was a period there he was shy about touching people, considering he hadn't ruled out freezing people to death, but he's always been comfortable in groups. Not everyone is so lucky. "I totally get that," he says. "But for the record, I don't think there's much of a safety issue any more, Rogue. Unless I've been reading it all wrong, seems like you've got that little problem under pretty good control." He gives a shrug. The fact that she was able to hug him without so much as a flinch when she first found he'd come back speaks volumes about how far she's come. "But I get wanting a bit of privacy, not wanting to be in the mansion with everyone. Breathing room." He nods again. "I don't think you want me building anything, but if there's anything I can help with, just ask." Logistics. Bobby is good at logistics. But if you give him a hammer your floor will fall through.

*

There's a quick, if sad, smile. " See, it's all about my moods. There are days when I'm in a foul mood and I'm terrified of getting near anyone, let alone touching them. My control sticks so long as I keep my emotions tamped down. Why do you think I don't date?"

*

"Well I always figured it was your exacting standards," Bobby replies with an obvious smirk. "But I get it. And you're not a student any more, so if you want to live off-campus, there's nothing wrong with that. Let me look over the surveys of the property, maybe we can figure out where the best spot would be." As the school's accountant, he'd have easy access to stuff like that, and going to the Professor with a well-researched plan is probably the best course of action, instead of just going in with a vague idea. "And I can get you an estimate on how much something like that'll cost. We won't exactly be able to bring in contractors, but figure we've probably got enough experts here already." And heavy lifting won't be a problem.

*

Rogue brightens as she looks at him. "Well, there are so few men willing to date a woman with the possibility of killing them with a kiss." She jokes. "You'd do that for me? Help me work out the numbers and find the best spot? I mean, I don't want to clutter anything up, that's why I was thinking the far side of the lake. Could even hide it in the woods, maybe. No, no contractors, but we have all sorts of interesting powers to make up for that aeound here."

*

"I think you underestimate the lengths some men will go to for a beautiful lady." Plenty of men have risked life and limb for a kind look from a woman throughout history. He gives Rogue a little grin, but doesn't push the matter any further. "Absolutely I would. Working out the numbers is like, my one useful skill. Not a lot of call for ice-sculpture chess figurines these days. I mean, I guess I could do weddings, but they'd just crush my artistic vision. I'm not gonna sell out for a few measly dollars!" Which is to say, of course, that he's happy to help. "Just something small, right? One bedroom, kitchen, bathroom?"

*

"Don't you start with that. Had someone say stuff like that to me, and I thought that, with some other things that got said, meant he maybe wanted to date. Then he was telling me all about this girl he met. And then he started acting different." There's a roll of her eyes.

She beams for him. "You're better for more than just number crunching. Who else would I get into trouble with?" She shrugs. "I mean, a second small bedroom, maybe. Just in case there was an emergency where we needed to offer someone else some isolation?"

*

"Yeah, remind me to freeze Summers' pants to his ass," Bobby says with a bit of a roll of his eyes. In fairness, he doesn't really -need- any more reason to freeze Scott's pants. It'd just be funny as hell. And Summers needs more humour in his daily life. At least, that's the justification. "I'm great at all kinds of things, it's true. But the number crunching seems to be what people hone in on when they're looking for silly things like 'employable skills'. It's my curse," he says with a mock-sigh. He really doesn't mind it, actually. Math is fun! "Yeah, a second room might be good. Visitors, people who are too liquored up to make it back to the manse in the dark. Meaning me. Because we're gonna have the most epic housewarming when this all done. Tequila." He grins widely. Not joking.

*

Rogue gigglesnorts at the mention of a housewarming. "We don't really do guests around here, but somewhere that someone who needs some space can crash.." She will shrug. "Some kid like me, someday, who can't sleep without being fully covered, and then can't sleep because they're roasting in all those layers. It would have been nice to have more space."

*

"Well, that's what I meant, really," Bobby clarifies. Yeah, not too many 'visitors' at the school, but plenty of situations where a spare room might be handy. "I pitched building myself a giant ice castle over the lake when I first got here, but he didn't go for it. Something about interfering with the ecosystem of the lake, and that I couldn't turn everything into a Disney film.." Bobby rolls his eyes again. "Although I think that means that the Professor has at least seen Frozen, so it kind of cast him in a whole new light."

*

She smiles. "Well, even the Prof probably likes Disney movies. They're staples around here, after all. Clean and kid friendly, so on and so forth." She just looks skyward, perhaps studying clouds and stars and things. "Just be nice to have a little space of my own, where I can completely relax."

*

"Yeah, I guess that makes sense. Just never pegged him for the type," Bobby says with a couple nods of his head. They've been making their way pretty steadily toward the mansion, and the back door is just ahead. "Well Rogue, we'll make it happen for you. Even if we have to cut down trees and make it out of logs." He grins, and holds the door open for Rogue to go through. "For now though, I'm beat. Believe it or not, super-sized chess sets kind of wear me out. Who'da thunk." He smirks again, and leans in to give his friend a hug if she'll take it. And then, up to his room where his bed awaits.

*

"Even super brains need a break." She will shrug. She will ruffle his hair. "I'm not surprised. That's a lot of ice, and you were super detailed." She will hug him tight, then head off to the kitch. She will get a snack before finding somewhere to get her own rest.
