Background

Zatanna Zatara is the Mistress of Magic. A famed and skilled magician of international reknown. Taught magic by her father, Zatanna travelled the world with him when she was younger - doing magic shows and solving magical mysteries.

Then her father went missing and despite her best efforts, Zee wasn't able to find him. Over time, Zatanna settled into a routine, performing around the world and investigating crime and supernatural disturbances.
She earned a name for herself in her own right doing that. Most of the superhero groups have worked with her because of that. If there's a magical mystery, Zatanna is one of the ones you want to speak with. If you want a good magic show, hers is one of the best.

Powers

Mystic Arts

Zatanna is able to tap the ambient magical energy of the universe to perform magical feats. The duration and cost of these spells and effects are detail in the Mana Usage flaw.

• Astral Projection: Able to project her Astral self to travel and observe as required. (Medium Mana Use)
• Divination: Using sympathetic links with items, locate and track things, creatures and people. The further away something or someone is, the less accurate the result. (Low Mana Use)
• Elemental Control: Tap and control the elements around her up to a distance of 10 miles. The effects of the elemental control will affect all Earth based materials but not exotic materials or metals. (Medium Mana Use)
• Flight: Up to 60 mph (Low Mana Use)
• Healing: Minor to moderate wounds and injuries in others. Slow the progress of toxins and poisons in others. (Medium Mana Use)
• Illusion casting:
• * Affect an area up to 500 feet with lifelike illusions that affect all five senses (Heavy Mana Use)
• * Affect an area up to 500 feet with lifelike illusions that affect sight and sound (Low Mana Use)
• * Affect one person, all five senses, as long as they are within eyesight (Medium Mana Use)
• Magic Blasts: Deliver a blast up to the equivalent of a shotgun blast over 50 feet (Medium Mana Use)
• Shields: Project a shield up to 20 feet diameter and provide protection up to the impact of a truck going 60 mph (Low Mana Use)
• Summoning And Binding: Able to summon demons, spirits, ghosts or other mid level and below supernatural entities and bind them to her bidding. This requires an exactly worded request and success in a contest of wills. (High Mana Use)
• Telekinesis: Move objects within 500 feet up to 10 tonnes (Medium Mana Use)
• Teleportation: Create a portal to another known location, even interdimensionally. (Low Mana Use)
• Transmutation: Able to convert non-living items from one form to another. Zatanna is able to convert one medium to another - wood to metal, glass to stone, etc. (Medium Mana Use)

Warding

Create wards to protect an area (up to the size of an apartment building), thing or people. This requires a ritual, the effects will be long lasting but require 'topping' up from time to time. (High Mana Use)

Skills

Hand to Hand Combat

Zatanna is competent in hand to hand combat and sword work. It's enough to normally surprise those around her and keep her safe when magic isn't an option.

Stage Magic

To be able to perform onstage and have people believe you, is magic in its own right. Having performed on stage with her father from a young age and then by herself, Zatanna has developed quite a repertoire of tricks which can be classed as stage magic. These skills include the ability to escape from restraints of all types, lock picking, sleight-of-hand and even general showmanship.

Zatanna can speak English, Japanese, Turkish, Arabic and Hebrew.

The Occult

Zatanna possesses a vast degree of knowledge relating to magic, the supernatural, and extra-dimensional beings. Her knowledge of magic is so great that she is often consulted by the various superhero teams for Occult issues and has been known to take on students to train them.

Taught by her father, Zatanna has honed her investigative skills to a fine point.

Advantages

Shadowcrest

The family home is known as Shadowcrest and it is extremely well warded against all manner of arcane and magical intruders. It is at Shadowcrest that Zatanna, along with other members of her family, store their mystical library and artefacts. The extensive collection of magical artefacts and tomes, range from harmless to malicious and some of them, no living member of her family knows how to overcome. The Shadowcrest mansion can be accessed from New York, but appears to exist in another dimension altogether.

Magical Workshop

Located in Shadowcrest is a magical workshop where Zatanna can examine or create items of a magical nature. Laid into the middle of the floor is an arcane circle for those times when she needs magical containment.

Contacts

Zatanna is well connected, not only in the world of show business but also in the world of the Occult. Her contacts range from Stage and Theatre Managers, Assistants and other assorted Business people through to Wizards, Witches and Demons and provide information, hard to find materials (generally at a cost) and connections.

Flaws

Somatic spells

For Zatannas magic to work, she has to speak the spell or write it down. No speaking / writing, no magic will happen. In addition, Zatanna has chosen to speak her spells backwards, not because she has to but as a tribute to her father. Whilst she normally has no problems doing this, sometimes the added level of complexity trips her up.

Exact wording

Zatanna will get exactly what she asks for when she casts her spells. For that reason, she must be accurate in the wording. Often she finds more haste, less pace.

Enemies in High Places

Zatanna's made a name for herself by 'fighting the good fight'. She doesn't back down easily from a fight and it often seems that she fights outside her weight class. Necromancers, Mages, Demon Lords, Sorcerers, Vampires you name it, it seems they all want a piece of the magician.

• No matter the odds, she will investigate and try to solve whatever is happening.

Mana Usage

If Zatanna expends all her mana, she could force the casting and use of spells but they will be far weaker.

• Light Mana Use: Able to sustain a single spell or effect for up to one day.
• Medium Mana Use: Able to sustain a single spell or effect for up to 8 hours
• Heavy Mana Use: Able to sustain a single spell or effect for up to 2 hours

Continued expenditure could lead to her falling ill or worse and recovery taking much longer to achieve. Under normal circumstances, Zatanna can replenish a fully exhausted mana pool in 48 hours.

Famous

Zatanna is famous and does not hide her identity. She's recognised Internationally as both a Stage Magician and Occult specialist - which can attract just the wrong sort of attention.

Missing Father

Zatanna's father went missing years ago. No one knows what happened to him. It haunts Zee to this day.
