Background

T'Challa was born to the royal house of Wakanda and grew up fully expecting to take the kingship and become the champion of his nation: The Black Panther. He underwent the rigors of preparation and the ceremony of the heart shaped herb. When his father died in his early teens, the kingdom was held in trust by a regent and the queen mother. All was as it should be.
The young prince succeeded to the throne and despite some bumps on the way - some of them rather large - he grew into his role. Wakanda was prosperous. It's place in the world secure. The secrets of it's national treasures and technology were safe. And with T'Challa as their champion - they would remain so.

It was not to be. Eighteen months ago a series of paranormal disturbances broke the peace of Wakanda's capital city and forced its monarch to confront the mysteries of Wakanda's distant past and the Panther Goddess they revered. The incident led to T'Challa delving deeply into the Necropolis below the city, dealing with the unquiet dead and finding himself in the middle of a spat between his kingdom's protector goddess and a rival. Disaster was averted, but it was a near thing. When all was said and done, the Panther goddess decreed that the Necropolis must have a king to watch over it, and raised up T'Challa as the King of the Dead. Since the Lord of the Dead must attend to their concerns and cannot rule the living, care of the kingdom was quietly remanded back to the regent and queen mother for fear of igniting a succession crisis and it has remained there for the past year.

T'Challa himself spent increasing amounts of time in the Necropolis, learning his duties and the dangers that came with them. Recently, events across the sea have rocked the realms invisible and the Panther Goddess has called for her champion to intervene amid portents of doom not only for the West, but for Wakanda as well. T'Challa has answered, though his dreams and the whispers of the restless dead tell him that a time of trials and endings is upon them. One that will test not only Wakanda and her people - both living and dead - but the entire world.

Powers

• Legacy of the Panther: As King of the Dead, T'Challa can access the memories, knowledge and experience of every previous Black Panther that is interred in the Necropolis, an unbroken line stretching back millennia. In extremis he may also call upon their strength, increasing his own several times over (35 ton lift) for periods of at most a few minutes.

• Panther's Blessing: Thanks to the Heart Shaped Herb and the blessing of the Panther Goddess, T'Challa enjoys a superhuman physicality. He can lift up to 5 tons, sustain speeds of fifty miles an hour for several hours, heals at four times a normal rate, is highly resistant to toxins and diseases and finally possesses senses of sight, hearing and smell that are beast-keen.

• Lord of the Dead: The Kingship of the Necropolis comes with some supernatural perks. T'Challa can command the dead with some limitations (See Foreign King). He can also form constructs with spirit energy - usually weapons and shields. Both can withstand attacks equivalent to an asgardian's strike either physical or magical. Weapons strike with only the force that T'Challa himself can give them and are concussive no matter what shape they take. All are effective against the physical and the ethereal simultaneously.

• Blessed of Bast: The power of the Panther Goddess can transport T'Challa and a handful of people to any location on earth that he knows to request (and isn't warded, Bast isn't that rude). He can also call the dead of the necropolis to him with a similar request. This ability cannot be used in battle and is never used for short distances. Bast would be offended if he asked to be taken somewhere he could walk.

Skills

• Gifted: T'Challa is highly intelligent and has studied engineering and physics well enough to be able to design and produce unique items that take advantage of the technology of his people and has been known to take an interest in applications of science sometimes deemed 'fringe' or 'esoteric'.

• Combatant: T'Challa has studied and practiced combat with traditional and advanced Wakandan armaments and common personal firearms as well as unarmed. His personal combat skills are sufficient to hold his ground against preternaturally powered or skilled foes. In addition, the traditional Panther fighting style involves a great deal of acrobatics and mobility so there is some overlap between his fighting skills and gymnastics.

• Classical Education: T'Challa has studied outdoorsmanship, tracking, rough terrain traversal, languages (English, Russian, Japanese and French), battlefield tactics, grand strategy, diplomacy, interpersonal charisma and persuasion in preparing to serve his people. He is quite skilled in them as well.

Advantages

• Prince of Wakanda: Despite no longer pressing his claim to the throne, T'Challa is still by birth a Prince of Wakanda and has access to such resources as befits his station in addition to the benefits of the connections and diplomatic perks his lineage brings. Separately, T'Challa has private resources resulting from his activities as an engineer and inventor, and these private resources are enough to allow him to live quite comfortably and engage in business ventures when he has the time. Not that he often does.

• King of the Necropolis: T'Challa is known in the realms invisible as the King of Dead Wakanda and the Champion of Bast. This affords him a certain amount of cachet among those in the know, and frequently opens doors typically closed to those without an innate arcane gift. That, and command of a huge city and literal army of the dead has its perks at times, especially if you don't want to be bothered.

• Panther Habit: An advanced vibranium-weave suit, the version T'Challa has is highly resistant to impact and directed energy attacks (will anything short of asgardian levels of harm), though is vulnerable to being cut if a blade is passed along the grain of the fiber. It can release energy from attacks in a controlled fashion to add extra force to the Panther's strikes or in a blast that will send man sized objects end over end for several yards in any direction. It has retractable vibranium claws that can cut and gouge any mundane material and advanced technology gives it comms capabilities, data uplinks, and filtration functionality. It can also 'compact' into an ornate necklace that T'Challa usually wears in civilian garb.

Flaws

• Champion of the Panther Goddess: T'Challa is not 'the Black Panther'. He is Bast's Black Panther. In addition to his responsibilities in overseeing the Necropolis and its inhabitants, he also sees to the Panther Goddess' interests on a wide range of sometimes quite dangerous matters. While technically he has free will, Bast would surely replace or depower him if he should anger her so he doesn't really have much choice in these matters.

• Overstimulation: The downside of having such keen senses is that sudden bursts of light, sound or very strong smells can leave T'Challa dazed or even injured.

• Not For The Living: Ruling over the dead takes a fair amount of time. Less time than ruling over the living, to be sure, but enough that most of the people T'Challa regularly interacts with are ghosts. Between that and his necromantic blessings from Bast he tends to have a sort of 'creepy' aura around him. And then there's the fact that the dead tend to bother him… and everyone around him. Sometimes this is harmless… but not always. Not even close.

• Foreign King: T'Challa only has unquestioning dominion over the Wakandan dead. He can command other dead, but they might not listen without some persuasion. Or, they might not listen at all.

• Feline Bearing: T'Challa was brought up royal and has lived as a prince or a king for most of his life. It's only recently that he finds himself more at loose ends in the world and that comes at a time when he's spending a lot of his time around ghosts. A combination of rusty social graces and royal reserve can make him seem aloof and distant at times - often rather inconvenient times. And then of course there's the times that the dead or Bast actually DEMAND his attention.

• The Secret Lives of Cats: While his position as a prince of Wakanda gives him access to its many wonders, he must be careful that his use of technology such as the panther habit remains unlinked to him personally or to Wakanda in general, at least until such time as Wakanda is prepared to reveal itself.
