Background

As a teenager, Peter Parker was attending a science exhibit hosted at Empire State University when a spider bit him after straying from another exhibit. The spider's radiation-altered venom caused a catalytic transformation to Peter's own DNA, and a physiological metamorphosis which imbued him with the proportional powers and abilities of a spider: enhanced strength, speed, agility, and reflexes, and the ability to cling to almost any surface.
Peter's first plan for his newfound abilities was to go into show business as a professional wrestler, and at first, it seemed like this would pay off. However, with his newfound fame going to his head, "Spider-Man" shrugged off the alarm raised about a fleeing thief … only to discover, when he got home that night, that a burglar had broken into his home and shot his uncle, killing the kind old man. Heartbroken, Peter suited up to go hunting for the burglar, only to discover it was the same thief whose flight he'd ignored.
"With great power, there must always come great responsibility." His uncle's death and Peter's own unwitting complicity drove this lesson deep into his heart; ever since that fateful night, even as he makes his way through the world in the guise of an average young man, Peter Parker has continued to fight evil, large and small, as the amazing, incredible, spectacular, friendly neighborhood Spider-Man.

Powers

• Spider-Sense: Spider-Man has an intuitive, and sometimes seemingly precognitive, awareness of danger or harm that's going to befall him. It can be as immediate as a villain punching or shooting, or as vague as a super-villain preparing to enact their latest plot. Immediate threats, within a range of about fifty yards, provide several hundredths of a second of warning; however, threats which are further away provide less intense of a response. This also doesn't let Peter sense danger aimed at others while avoiding him.
• Super Strength: Spider-Man can lift about ten tons under normal circumstances. He routinely pulls his punches to avoid inflicting permanent damage on his enemies, so many of them tend to underestimate how strong he really is.
• Enhanced Speed and Agility: Besides his raw strength, Spider-Man is also much faster than an average human being, able to run, jump, and dodge at speeds which would leave Olympic athletes watching his dust settle. Dodging bullets is relatively easy, particularly when his spider-sense warns him practically before the trigger's been pulled. He also has an improved sense of balance and equilibrium, letting him keep track of which way is up or down in spite of how much he twists, flips, contorts, or cartwheels.
• Enhanced Endurance: In addition to his strength and agility, Spider-Man is far more resilient than average humans, able to keep running, swinging, and fighting for most of a day, or to keep going in spite of whatever bruises, cuts, etc. he's collected in his recent fights. He also possesses a moderate healing factor, letting him recuperate and return to action faster. Bruises tend to fade within a day or two, broken bones (when properly set) mend within a week. (He's no more resistant to alcohol than average humans, though.)
• Wall-Crawling: Spider-Man can 'stick' to vertical or inverted surfaces with ease, letting him scale sheer walls or hang onto ceilings as easily as walking on the ground. He prefers to keep the gloves and boots of his costume as thin as possible to aid in this. Exceptionally slick surfaces can prove difficult or impossible to cling to in this manner, though.

Skills

• Chemistry: While Peter shows a significant affinity for many of the sciences, chemistry has long been first and foremost in his studies. He formulated the first version of his web-fluid when he was still in high school, and has continued to improve on the formula as he refines his knowledge and new materials become available, even tweaking it when necessary to account for specific enemies' tactics or equipment.
• Photography: Peter has long harbored an interest in photography, from the cameras themselves to the processing and development of exposed film. Even in an era where digital photography has all but supplanted the original analog techniques, knowing how to work with physical film remains an asset in his work. Understanding details such as exposure time, aperture width, and shutter speed can only benefit a cameraman, even when the best camera at hand is built into a cell phone (as long as its camera app allows for tweaking equivalent settings), and he's skilled enough behind the shutter that an actual career in photography isn't that far-fetched.
• Seat-of-Pants Tactics: Even before the fateful spider bite, Peter had a quick and alert mind. With his enhanced reflexes as Spider-Man, Peter is able to quickly pick up on an opponent's weaknesses and patterns in the middle of a fight, and work out how to capitalize on them, a necessary skill when so many supervillains could overwhelm him.
• Engineering: Peter is reasonably skilled and highly inventive when it comes to electrical and mechanical tinkering, having designed and constructed not only his web-shooters, but also his spider-tracers, dedicated communications equipment, and other gadgets. He's also utilized those skills to make the work of photographing Spider-Man more reliable, rigging a camera to follow him (or his current foe) and automatically snap photos while he's in the middle of a fight.
• Investigation: While he leaves written journalism to trained reporters, and most evidence-gathering to the police, Peter has had to develop his own detective skills to help track down villains, from average crooks to the super-villains who plague his life on a variously regular basis.
• Improvisational Weaving: While it's simple enough to simply tangle or entrap enemies with straightforward sprays of his web-fluid, Spider-Man has a great deal of experience at using his webbing in more sophisticated applications, such as fashioning a hang-glider, reinforcing a damaged structure, catching a precariously-perched vehicle, or weaving nets or bags to hold more dangerous targets, as long as he has enough web-fluid.
• Web-Swinging: Another use of Spider-Man's web-shooters is to assist him in travelling across the New York skyline by anchoring a long web-line somewhere suitable, and brachiating along the streets or over the buildings. He's been traveling around New York this way for years now, and he can easily outpace conventional ground traffic if he needs to get somewhere in a hurry.
• Battle Chatter: For assorted reasons, Spider-Man tends to keep his mouth running when he's in the middle of a fight. This can range from insulting or snarking at his opponents, asking serious questions, or simply peppering whomever with remarks or idle inquiries about whatever comes to mind. He tends to default to jokes and quips - but as a rule, if Spider-Man is NOT talking up a storm while he's fighting you, Something Is Very Wrong.
• Contacts: In his dual lives as a civilian and a super-hero, Peter has made a number of acquaintances across various walks of life - at the Daily Bugle, in the NYPD, and amongst the super-heroic community, to name a few. If he doesn't know how to handle something himself, he probably knows somebody he can ask - and if there's one thing you can never have too many of, it's friends.

Advantages

• Spider-Suit: Spider-Man's signature, form-fitting costume, immediately recognizable by the spider emblems on his chest and back. The lenses protect his eyes and shield his identity, and can adjust their apertures to expand or limit his field of view when necessary; the fit is snug enough to make sure his freedom of movement is unimpaired, and the aramid-derived fabric provides a degree of protection against both impacts and penetration, stopping or slowing small-caliber bullets and helping reduce damage from knives, and almost impervious to abrasive force. He's redesigned it a few times over the years, occasionally changing up the design, color scheme, and integrated accessories, but the ol' red-and-blue is still his go-to when he needs to sew together a new one.
• Web-Shooters: Spider-Man's signature equipment, letting him launch lines or sprays of the customized adhesive formula which constitutes his webbing. The nozzle width and pressure can be adjusted to control the width and force of a stream of web-fluid, and he carries a supply of extra "cartridges" of web-fluid whenever he's out fighting crime. A straight-line spray can travel up to 300 feet (30 stories) upwards before gravity overcomes it; for closer work, the nozzle can project a "fan" of webbing up to ten feet long and three feet across before the webbing fails to cohere, leaving only a sticky mist.
• Spider-Tracers: Miniaturized transmitters which can be attached to criminals, vehicles, or objects that Spider-Man will want to track down later. They have adhesive pads to let them cling to almost any surface, and are tiny enough that it usually takes a deliberate search to find a tracer he's planted. Originally, Spider-Man had to use a special receiver to follow his spider-tracers, but adjusting their output frequency made it possible for him to detect them by way of his spider-sense as well.
• Spider-Comms: With the appearance of other arachnid-themed superheroes, Peter developed a specialized network of encrypted communicators to help them keep in contact, and coordinate their efforts when they need to work together. This network includes voice transmission, image sharing, and GPS capabilities, although "guests" on the network can only access the first two functions.
• Camera: While Peter is frequently strapped for cash, he invests reasonably generously in his photography equipment. If his camera isn't exactly top-of-the-line, it's still close enough to compete fairly, letting him snap photos good enough to turn in at the Daily Bugle and - if they're what the editors need that day - earn him some much-needed money. He also keeps at least one good "backup" camera on hand, whether in the event his main camera is out of commission, or to leave the backup to take photos of Spider-Man in action, and accessorizes the latter to help it follow the action where possible.
• College Student: As a biochemistry major at Empire State University, Peter has relatively easy access to the class buildings, laboratories, and other facilities provided by ESU for student use; he still has to pay for supplies, though, even with some financial assistance to draw upon. He also knows a number of faculty there, who are occasionally helpful (directly or not) for Spider-stuff as well.

Flaws

• Secret Identity: Even when "Spider-Man" was seemingly destined for show business, Peter took steps to keep his costumed identity separate from his normal civilian life. Since becoming a costumed superhero, the importance of safeguarding his real identity has become critical: Peter is fully and keenly aware that Spider-Man's enemies would have no qualms about targeting his classmates, friends, or even his elderly aunt in order to get at him - and the few times a supervillain has learned of Peter Parker's name, they've proven him entirely correct. As such, Spider-Man does everything he can to keep his identity secret, up to and including improvising a mask if he can't get into full costume. Only a very few individuals have earned Spidey's trust to the depth that he'll show them the face behind his mask, and it's not a choice he makes easily.
• Guilt Complex: While most superheroes (Spidey included) know that you can't always save everyone, Spider-Man feels the weight of everyone he *hasn't* been able to save over the years, starting with his beloved uncle. That weight constantly pushes him to do better, fight harder and smarter and faster, and so forth, and he is virtually incapable of accepting a loss, even when there was legitimately NOTHING he could have done.
• Parker Luck: Nice things just don't usually happen to Peter - and if they do, something bad is probably going to happen anyway. Peter has learned to deal with the bad things as they happen, and even the good things are usually treated warily for a while.
• Borderline Finances: Superheroing does not pay the bills, but keeping his equipment in shape and upgraded takes a nice big bite out of Peter's bank account. Outright poverty has been kept at bay thus far with a mix of frugal living, financial aid, and the occasional photographic windfall, but Peter hasn't been genuinely comfortable with his finances in a long, long time.
