Background

Nick Gleason was born, a mutant, to loving parents from Cleveland, Ohio. Despite being a red eye'd, slightly fuzzy child with fangs and pointed ears during much of his youth, he had a fairly normal - even idyllic - upbringing.

When he was 13, his parents were both killed in a car accident and Nick was sent to live with family who simply put did not know how to deal with him. Matters only worsened when puberty well and truly started for him and his mutation kicked into overdrive, taking him from odd looking kid to gangly wolfman over the course of three painful years. It was during his sophomore year in high school that he came to the attention of the newly opened School for Gifted Youngsters and his relieved relatives sent him there as soon as the offer was made.

After graduating from the School, Nick and several other fellow students founded a team called the Paragons, separate from but affiliated with other teams also founded by School alumni and staff. The group operated for a couple of years but this was the height of registration and after the 'Brooklyn Blitz' the team broke up from a combination of legal, social and personal pressures. Nick, unwilling to submit to the continuing rigors of registration fled 'civilized' life and headed both figuratively and literally underground.

For the next few years he lived among those calling themselves Morlocks, a valued friend and ally to some, but never really 'one of them'. When Registration ended, Nick returned to the surface and began trying to put his life back together. Finding that a few of the old team assets were being held for the team by backers - most pertinently a small office building - he convinced his former sponsors to let him take them over with an eye toward eventually rebuilding the team. To pay the bills, he began to teach a bit at the School, and got a private detective's license. These days he can just about make ends meet. It's not the life he thought he'd have before this wild ride started, but for now it will do.

Powers

• Hunter's Form: Being stuck as a big, brown wolfman does come with some advantages. Nick can lift twelve tons, is resistant (but not immune) to low velocity firearms (pistols), can run up to 40 miles per hour for several hours, has just above peak human levels of agility and has claws that can cut mild steel. Additionally, he heals injuries in about three quarters of the time regular people do.

• Hunter's Sense: Nick possesses hearing and a sense of smell equivalent to a wolf. This does not always work out to his benefit, though. See 'Humanity Stinks'.

• Canine Mind: Nick's psychology - and brain structure - are significantly different than regular people. That can be a problem - see 'Feral' - but it also means that his instincts are pretty sharp when it comes to tracking, surviving or doing things that wild animals do.

Skills

• Survival: Nick spent a good portion of registration underground with the Morlocks and the Legion of Monsters. Though he has since returned to a more or less normal life, he remains quite capable of surviving in urban and wilderness environments.

• Combatant: Nick was a professional hero for a time, and his life since then has not been conflict free. He can hold his own against well trained fighters in melee combat though anyone who might be considered elite definitely has an advantage against him.

• Private Detective: Nick is a duly licensed private detective, and is a fairly decent investigator, helped by his keen senses. A lot of his clientele are mutants and others who trust someone 'not normal' to handle their problems better than the authorities.

Advantages

• X-Alumnus: Nick graduated from the Xavier's School and teaches wilderness survival part time there. He has a few friends among the students and staff, and a few who remember when HE was a student.

• Walker in Darkness: Nick lived for a time in the Monster Metropolis and has contacts among those who call themselves Morlocks.

• Paragon Investigations: While the Paragons have not reformed and most of their team assets have since been sold off or claimed by the people who backed the project in the first place, there was enough left that Nick is able to run his PI business out of it and keep everything more or less taken care of. He may one day try to resurrect the team, since some of the original backers are still keen, but for now this is enough.

• Kit: One of the things left over from the Paragons is his old flack vest, which he has kept. Because getting shot hurts, damn it.

Flaws

• Obvious: Nick is a 6'2" brown wolfman. He is utterly incapable of blending into a crowd and that earns him negative attention of varying sorts, as well as incredibly unwelcome positive attention as well.

• Humanity Stinks: Literally. And they're noisy too. Being in a city is near perpetually distracting for Nick and he's much more sensitive to especially strong smells or loud noises than your average person, and that's to say nothing of stuff he can hear that other people can't.

• Feral: Nick's 'lizard brain' is especially strong and can put him into fight-or-flight mode if he's ever significantly mentally or emotionally compromised - say by being telepathically manipulated, distraught or even just short on sleep.

• Berserker: More than just being a bit 'wild', Nick can be pushed into a berserk rage if someone pushes his emotional buttons enough. It's not something he's likely to simply fly off the handle and do, but when it happens he is almost totally incapable of distinguishing friend from foe.

• Continuing Evolution: Nick's mutation has progressed through several stages taking him from a fairly normal looking child to the wolfman he is today. That has been accompanied by a great deal of pain and radical changes in his physiology, biochemistry and neural structure. It shows no signs of stopping too, and as changed as he is Nick worries about what his mutation might throw at him next.
