Background

Martin had a very normal upbringing in the 70s and 80s. For all he was a mutant, there was no dramatic outing of this. In fact he didnt know about it for many years. Sure his power was active, but it changed nothing.

Both his parents died in a car crash in the late 80s. Having been in highschool, he was put into the care of his only living relative, an aunt. The two did not get along. So badly so that Martin went into the army as soon as he graduated high school. He took up medicine while in the military. There he served for years, fighting in Desert Storm and some years beyond it. The young man became an excellent trauma surgeon, certainly augmented by his mutant ability to heal.

That he discovered during his service in the middle east, saving the life of a soldier whos been taken in a bomb blast. Luckily the soldier was unconscious and no one was around to see Martin knit the young man back to whole.

His Aunt died before he left the military, but he left the army soon after, and returned to New York. There he entered medical school so that he could legally practice as a doctor in America. Once graduating, he went to work for several hospitals in New York, becoming a trauma surgeon in the ER. The reason its several was because he drifted from hospital to hospital. Not only due to being too blunt for his superiors liking, but because he didnt want it obvious that he was using a mutant power to heal. When you start saving a more lives than is average, people take notice.

During the registration act, Martin kept his head down and was mostly ignored. Not having obvious powers, with his red hair as the only physical sign (red heads lose the color in their late thirties), and being in a position that was much needed, the powers that be left him alone.

Other than that hes friends and a string of lovers, but hasnt settled down with anyone for any real time.

Unfortunately hes not all that good at inter office politics either, and angered some of the wrong people over the years, to the point hes been forced to semi retire. Now and then hes called in to help a department, but mostly hes been struggling to find something to do.

Powers

Healing: Small wounds and large, he can mend flesh and save lives. This ability is by touch only, and at its best can rebuild internal organs over an hour. Small wounds take moments, but regrowing a limb could take a week depending on how much was lost. He can not save someone from a wound that would instantly kill, like removing of the head, or destruction of the heart. Nor can he alter DNA. This means he might cure early cancers, but not genetic diseases.

All this comes at the cost of increased food consumption, and rest/exhaustion. Major wounds would require him to gain a full night of rest before doing anything else, and could take working in stages over many days. It drains calories as fuel. When doing a long term healing he can eat two to three times a normal human to keep going. When not healing he eats at a normal rate.

There are no overt signs that his power is working.

Self-Healing: He can do to himself what he can do to others, with the same limitations. Over all hes healthier than his age would suggest, and he will live longer as a result. Age 50, hes physically in his early thirties. Hes not immortal, and while he can take wounds other normal humans might not, a bullet to the brain can still kill him. This gives him a better stamina than nomals, to where he might not need sleep for three days if hes not healing.

Empathy: With a range of twenty feet, Martin can sense emotions, and share his own. He can not control anyone with this ability, but he might fool or distract someone depending on their will power and knowledge of mental gifts. Like sharing fear to scare someone. He can only share what hes experienced. Leaving his range negates the effects, excepting perhaps the physical reaction to such feelings may linger. Like a racing heart for being afraid. This ability cant get through any trained telepathic shields.

Skills

Military training: Its been a while since he did so, but Martin is an experienced special forces medic. Trained in the handling of firearms, field on the fly life saving, and in combat situations while in the army. He can care for, load, and fire mundane hand guns to several fully automatic types. Knows military tactics, and keeps a level head while under fire. (He doesnt own a firearm.)

Medicine: A highly skilled trauma surgeon with decades of experience, he is a full doctor. With all the degrees, perks, and training such a thing requires. He still attends seminars and training refreshers so that his skills dont atrophy.

Spanish: Conversational levels only, hes picked some up over the years.

Advantages

Comfortable Living: Due to his family being dead hes inherited quite a bit. Applying this responsibly, hes managed a comfortable nest egg through stocks and other means. Certainly not enough to be considered truly wealthy, he wouldnt lack for anything mundane.

Doctor: Martin not only trained in the military for medicine, but once he left the military he trained to be an ER physician. Hes a great deal of trauma knowledge, and experience, as well as some good contacts in the medical community.

Mental Shields: Nothing that would stand against any trained telepath, he has developed the means to block out the emotions of others. It has a side effect of making it so hes not mentally loud to telepath

Flaws

Foot in Mouth: Hes a short temper for the stupid, and often speaks before thinking. Often to his own detriment. The man is blunt and to the point. Not at all good at politics of any type. Rather why hes semi-retired now.

Workaholic: Puts in way, way too many hours, to the detriment of those who would be his friends. Now that hes semi-retired hes trying to fill the hours as best he can.

No Family: All of his family are gone and hes never married. Martin has some friends, but for the most part he is alone.
