Background

Laynia Sergeievna Petrovna Krylova, more commonly called Laynia Petrovna was born in Minsk, in Belarus during the height of the Cold War. The daughter of a nuclear physicist Sergei Krylov and his wife Marya Karlova, her parents were accidentally irradiated during an experiment. When her mother subsequently died during childbirth, Laynia's father was told that she and her twin brother had died as well. The mutant infants were then taken into custody by the Russian state and, when their superhuman abilities first manifested in adolescence, were turned over to a government-run school for training Russian mutants. After being given the codename Darkstar because of her mutant ability to manipulate the extra dimensional energy known as the Darkforce, Petrovna studied at the academy alongside her overly protective brother Nikolai, codenamed Vanguard, and both trained to become government agents by the KGB.

As it turns out, the staff at the school had been draining the powers of their mutant charges, using the stolen power in order to bestow them temporarily on themselves. Once discovered by another of the trainees, this plan was routed and the program restructured. Once graduated to field agent one of the first missions Darkstar was assigned sent her to the United States as powered muscle to support the assassins sent after the Black Widow once she broke ties with the KGB. When later they met again they trained together, Laynia unknowing of how the Red Room and Lock and Key were used to make the Black Widow a sleeper agent.

Eventually, Laynia became very disillusioned by her life as a government agent and attempted to defect to America with the aid of both the Black Widow and her sponsor in S.H.I.E.L.D., whom Laynia never met. Sadly, it did not go well and Laynia was shot by a sniper and thought to be dead when she seemed to explode, consumed in a nova of Darkforce energy. Her body was never recovered.

This is when her dual nature made itself known, though not for some time. At the moment of her apparent death, the Darkforce version of her denied this as she wanted to live and Laynia's death on Earth would kill her too. It is uncertain if this feat could ever be repeated, but Darkforce Laynia pulled her Earthly body into the Darkforce Dimension and spent the next several years repairing it. Time in the Darkforce Dimension is a tricky thing, it doesn't always pass at the same rate as on Earth so when (eventually) Laynia was returned to Earth she discovered to her shock that it had been a full 40 years since she last remembered!

Much had changed, but with her being listed as dead, she was able to finally make good her escape to the United States by way of France, where she was shot. Most of her resources were gone, but she still had knowledge of several money and supply caches from her espionage days and used them to make her way and enough spycraft to carry it off. Of course, there s no guarantees that there aren't those back in Mother Russia who remember the Darkstar, her return may very well trigger events that come back to haunt Laynia.

Powers

Darkforce Manipulation: Darkstar has the mutant ability to tap into and manipulate an intense black form of extradimensional energy called the Darkforce. She has in essence two bodies, one in the normal world, the other existing in the Darkforce Dimenstion but symbiotically linked to her material body, it is thanks to her dual nature that she has such control over the Darkforce. Laynia's Darkforce energy possesses mass and form and can be utilized in a variety of ways including, but not limited to the various items detailed below.

* Darkforce Constructs: Darkstar is able to project the Darkforce into simple mentally controlled forms such as pincers, rings, columns, spheres, and so on. She can form objects with a maximum density and durabilty that rivals the armour of a modern front-line battle tank. She can create individual objects up to the size of a semi-truck, or a large enough dome to cover a small two story building though something that large will exhaust her quickly, and is only about as durable as cast iron, or low grade steel. These objects are solid and well defined while she consciously wills them to be, but cease to exist if she loses concentration or wills it so. Darkstar can also project a beam of solid force capable of impacting an object with sufficient power to rupture her own constructs. Roughly fifty tons of force can be focused on an area about an inch across with wider beams reduced in strength - at maximum aperture she can generate a cone that is some thirty feet wide at the end, and up to sixty feet long that can knock over a fully loaded railway car, or penetrate steel.

* Darkforce Teleportation: Darkstar can employ the Darkforce to teleport herself by creating portals that lead to the Darkforce dimension itself to traverse an ambiguous distance there before returning to normal space. Her range seems to be limited primarily by her ability to navigate, no easy task considering the bewildering nature of the dimension, anything beyond a few miles is her present practical limit. Portals take time to form, roughly a second or so per foot of width of the portal, at present she can only create a single portal at a time, and her maximim width is sufficient to allow a small aircraft like a Quinjet though it. Travel through the Darkforce Dimension is highly disorienting, see 'Teleportation Trauma' in the flaws section for more details.

* Darkforce Flight: Darkstar uses the attractive force of the Darkforce dimension to fly. By generating an invisible, intangible portal into the dimension in the contour of her body, she balances its attractive force upon her against that of gravity without passing through the portal. In this way she can fly without generating thrust, a sort of 'push-me/pull-you' effect. At present she can fly at speeds up to 120 miles per hour, the maximum velocity at which she is still able to breathe. In theory were she to don a pressurized flight suit with an independent air supply she could exceed this limitation, this is entirely untested at present. She cannot support the weight of anyone other than herself while in flight.

Skills

Spycraft: Darkstar has been trained in basic spycraft thanks to the Komitet Gosudarstvennoy Bezopasnosti (KGB) which she later augmented with additional training with the Black Widow, Natalia Romanova. She is by no means a master spy, not in any regard but she is competent and can manage simple ciphers and codebreaking, basic lockpicking and security systems, how to spot a tail (or be one), and standard interrogation and investigative techniques.

Combat Training: Darkstar is an adequate hand to hand combatant able to hold her own with trained professionals such as soldiers or Police, but outclassed by anyone with superior training such as a Navy Seal, or an agent of Mossad. She is proficient with knives, and has an expert rating with handguns.

Languages: Laynia is fluent in Russian, has a smattering of related dialects, as well as some Polish. Her English is excellent, though she does have a noticeable Russian accent.

Physical Conditioning: Darkstar has the strength and stamina of a woman of her age and mass who engages regularly in intensive physical exercise. She is skilled at swimming, climbing, running, skating, skiing, tumbling and acrobatics. Her native talents have been enhanced by years of training.

High Society: Darkstar is conversant with proper etiquette, has exquisite table manners, and knows how to carry herself with proper deportment. She has a well developed fashion sense, and is trained in ballroom and formal dancing.

Advantages

Darkstar Costume: Darkstar was provided with a costume made of a highly durable stretch fabric, the material a composite of polymers and carbon fibers that is insulated to provide her with excellent protection from cold conditions such as those in the Arctic or high altitudes. In a pinch, however she has learned to fashion a similar costume from Darkforce energy, this suit can be donned immediately but lacks the insulation of the physical one.

Flaws

Teleportation Trauma: Travel through the Darkforce dimension is disorienting, unsettling, and if prolonged can lead to madness. Darkstar is largely immune to the above negative effects thanks to her symbiotic-twin. However, when she teleports she does suffer some disorientation and furthermore suffers light-blindness when returning to normal space that lasts for several seconds. The Darkforce dimension is also very cold, though transition through one of her portals is nearly instant, there is some small amount of time that passes in transit, and the cold is definitely part of the whole experience. Her passengers suffer similarly, though they will not be light-blinded, otherwise the disorientation and chill applies to a greater extent than Darkstar suffers.
