Background

BACKGROUND

Ford was born to Sarah Benett and a man named Akura Kihiro (or, so he always claimed), but Ford only knew his biological father for about 4 years, before he left him and his mom on their own. His mother had always told Ford that he had to keep his natural abilities quiet, and once he began interacting properly with other children, it was apparent why. Ford was much stronger and more resilient then other kids; more than one of his playmates always ended up running to their parents saying that Ford was being scary or dangerous, and in time, Ford learned to hide what he was truly capable of, much to his displeasure. He crossed a number of mutants in his school years, confronting them about being so open with their powers in much the same manner he used to, but all it every earned him was becoming a target of their bullying. This began a somewhat shaky opinion of mutants that he has never fully gotten over.

At 12 years old, his mother remarried again, and a year later, Ford's stepsister, Ira, was born. Although Ford never got along with his stepfather, who only ever seemed invested in his mom or Ira, Ford grew to appreciate Ira's admiration for her older brother, and they remained close over the years. Ford developed into a fine mechanic, even landing a simple job wrenching vehicles for a local body shop. His true passion, however, was to become a racer, aiming to win a few championships, and bring home so much money that his mom and sister would never want for anything ever again.

However, almost two years ago, Ford's life was tossed on its side. A chase between a vigilante mutant and a group of robbers had grown out of control in uptown New York, and left several city blocks closed. Ford immediately rushed to the scene, seeking his mom and little sister, who had been traveling to the area for a school event. However, by the time Ford found their car, it was smashed and damaged, pulling the car free of debris to find his mom dead, and his little stepsister crippled. Rushing Ira to the hospital, Ford remained diligently by her side the entire time. His stepfather, however, never showed up, and after returning home to collect some things for Ira's quickly lengthening stay, Ford learned why. His stepfather, having gotten word that Ford's mom was dead, had abandoned the two of them to their fate, evidently no longer wanting any part of the family now that tragedy had struck.

Since then, Ford has stepped up as Ira's caretaker, putting his dreams of becoming a racer on hold as he scraped enough money for her recovery and livelihood. Ford quickly learned that his mediocre salary simply wasn't enough to not only care for himself and Ira, but pay for her medical needs as well. Ford has turned to more illegal means of getting the money he needs for Ira, though he patently refuses to do so with his latent demonic abilities. Upon bringing Ira home, Ford dug through some of his mom's things in hopes of finding something to sell, and stumbled across an odd club in the back of her closet, and a box of old photos and a diary of his biological father. Needless to say, Ford was startled to learn his father's true form was that of an oni - a demon straight out of Japanese mythology - and that Ford himself was a half-demon! A detail he has kept silent since learning it, for fear of either scaring Ira, or drawing unwanted attention… though it has brought him some measure of comfort in finally grasping himself and his powers. Ford simply wants to get back on his feet, take care of his sister, and if possible, pursue his dream of becoming a great racer once again. Until then, he just needs to knuckle down and survive.

Powers

ONI DURABILITY: Ford's oni heritage grants him a natural resistance to many threats. He is a step above most humans in durability, able to shrug off bladed weapons and small arms fire. Ford also has a strong resistance to poison and disease, and is able to heal from most injuries at 10 times the speed of a normal human.

SUPER STRENGTH: Ford is gifted with super strength, able to lift 2 tons overhead without breaking a sweat.

ONI SENSES: Ford has sharper senses than most human, able to see, hear, smell, and feel differences up to 25 feet away. However, his sense of smell is strangely stronger, able to smell clearly from 50 feet. Ford is able to see up to 25 feet in perfect darkness, but his vision is limited to black and white.

IRON WILL: Ford has spent his entire life fighting the hedonistic tendencies of his oni heritage, and has developed an ironclad willpower in response, bolstered by his demonic powers. Reading his mind will take some doing, and controlling it requires significant effort or powerful magic when he's concentrating.

SHAPESHIFTING: Ford is able to alter his appearance at will to look like someone else entirely, becoming a perfect replica of the original person. Ford can perfectly mimic a targets voice, as well as things like fingerprints. However, he cannot replicate superhuman or unique abilities, nor can copy skills or knowledge that the person knows. Furthermore, he can only use it to assume a human guise - animals and non-humanoid identities cannot be mimicked. Ford can maintain this shapechange indefinitely, provided he is conscious; knocking him out or falling asleep will break the illusion and revert him back to his normal appearance.

NATURAL CAMOFLAUGE: Ford has the ability to turn invisible at will, and can remain so as long as he remains conscious. Additionally, this ability has a second hidden function: while he is invisible and remaining motionless, his body will disguise itself to appear invisible to other forms of vision, such as heat detection or night vision. If he moves, his body tries to adapt to the changes, but leaves something of a blurry trail behind him. Ford is totally unaware of this secondary feature (for now, anyways).

ONI FORM: Ford's trump card, the Oni Form is a state in which Ford takes on the full might of his oni lineage. Ford's skin turns a crimson red, his hair elongates into a sharp, jet black cascade behind him, his jaw sprouts protruding tusks, and his clothes shift into a simple loincloth and tunic made from tiger pelts. In this form, all of Ford's physical and mental abilities are amplified tenfold, and can morph into any animal he can think of, at the cost of being able to turn into a person or become invisible.

Skills

MECHANIC: Ford is a mechanic by profession and choice. He absolutely loves machines, cars in particular, and will gladly talk your ear off about which engine oil is the best for which model, the advantages of stick vs. automatic, and how to discern the sound of a glass pack from a turbo nozzle. If it paid better, it's all he would do, besides racing.

ACE PILOT: Ford's original ambition of being a racer was due in large part to his exceptional hand-eye coordination. Although Ford largely prefers sports cars and is most comfortable behind the wheel of one, he has a knack for quickly adapting to civilian vehicles designed for the road, and his reflexes at the controls are top notch.

BRIGHT MIND: While not exactly a genius, Ford is a smart cookie and a quick study. He takes to most academic subjects easily, especially where they concern engineering or mechanics.

Advantages

APARTMENT: Ford's humble keep and castle, it's all Ford can afford on a mechanic's salary, and is shared with his little sister, but Ford's proud of the home he has. Residing in the best neighborhood in New York he can muster, it's small, humble, and cozy… and who would think to look there?

KANABO: An enchanted, heavy (weighs half a ton), and incredibly durable kanabo, measuring 4 feet long, left a long time ago by his demon father. Ford can summon this weapon to his grasp at any time, but once he is holding it, he immediately transforms into his oni form. Ford is aware that the weapon is intelligent in some regard, because whenever he holds it, he has a strong urge to seek out magic users or their sources. He knows the kanabo feeds off magical sources and can drain things of magical or demonic/divine energies, but the weapon must be within five feet of something to begin feeding. While holding his kanabo, Ford is capable of instinctively casting a limited number of black magic spells. He can technically cast these spells as many times as he wishes, but he must be holding his kanabo to do it. Casting spells erodes his willpower, and the most Ford believes he can cast in a 24 hour period is about five spells. After that, he's unsure, but he suspects it's not good. (see Magical Itch) Ford can cast the following spells:
DRAGON RIFLE - A burst of ethereal energy, shaped like a silver eastern dragon, zigzags wildly towards his target. The impact acts as a small explosion, albeit magical in nature, and can hit targets that would normally be intangible.
TYPHOON DANCE - Ford spins rapidly in place and whips up a powerful twister. The surrounding area becomes whipped with hurricane force winds.
BLACK FOG - Ford swings his club and kicks up a thick black cloud of acrid smoke and soot. This cloud as about 20 feet in radius and heavily conceals vision.
DEATH'S GRASP - A number of long, pale, and emaciated arms spring up from the ground and latch onto whatever Ford directs them to. Each arm is capable of sustaining about half a ton of pressure before being crushed.
BAMBOO FORTRESS - An exceptional number of supernaturally hard bamboo chutes spring up around Ford shielding him from danger in a single direction. The chutes can tolerate about 20 tons of force before being shattered.
TIDAL STOMP - Ford stomps the ground and summons a large wave of water in front of him, before sending it crashing in whatever direction he chooses. The water impacts as normal, but quickly evaporates after only 10 seconds.
BURNING RAIN - Ford's most powerful spell (that he's aware off), Ford swiftly summons a number of pitch black clouds overhead before dropping several dozen large fireballs on the general vicinity. Ford cannot accurately hit with this spell, but he knows they will never explicitly hit him.

Flaws

DEMONIC HERITAGE: Ford's Oni Form radiates an exceptional amount of negative and demonic energy. To anybody who can sense black magic or evil forces, Ford lights up like a Christmas tree to them, and only by reverting to his human form can he cover up this energy. Ford is also ashamed of his Oni Form, finding it highly unattractive and difficult to control at times, and tries to limit how often he uses it. Besides, he is half demon, and that sort of company is usually frowned upon in polite society.

YOUNG WARD: Ford is the sole caretaker of his medically fragile younger step-sister, Ira. Ford will take any measure to protect her, and anyone who threatens her will undoubtedly incur Ford's wrath.

WHAT AM I?: Ford is an oni, and unfortunately, as he has come to realize, oni are hard to read up on. Being a demon based on disguise and hiding, this shouldn't be surprising, but it also makes learning about his abilities incredibly frustrating. What he does know, he only knows from testing on himself. He may have either untapped abilities or unknown weaknesses, but without any source of information, he can only guess what his true power might be. All he knows for sure is that most stories and legends agree on one thing: oni are the enemy of mankind… and that worries Ford.

BAD MIMIC: Ford is not the greatest actor. If a target of his shapeshifting is generally quiet, doesn't have to talk much, or is a total stranger, he's in the clear. More complicated interactions, especially with folks who would recognize that person's quirks, and his impersonation starts to fall apart. And unfortunately, Ford is the sort of person who likes conversation.

CRIMINAL BEHAVIOR: Ford is a criminal, pure and simple. He does work for chop shops, theft, and smuggling. He's not proud of these activities, but they help supplement his income to help care for Ira, and that's all Ford really cares about.

HEDONISM: Ford is a passionate fellow, which helps fuel his demonic powers, but it can also leave him vulnerable to overindulgence. He is a shameless womanizer, favors strong drink, good food, comfortable surroundings, and is subconsciously driven to acquire as much for himself (and by proxy, Ira) as he can. While he normally has this behavior in check, if sufficiently tempted, he could cave to his baser instincts.

PREJUDICED: Ford has something of a rocky history with mutants. He was the target of their bullying in school, he has lost jobs thanks to mutants either snatching them from him, or outright wrecking where he works, and most egregious of all, a mutant was responsible for his mother's death. While Ford tries not to let his rocky history color how he acts around mutants, he is noticeably more tense and vigilant around either suspected or known mutants, and if a situation turns south, Ford's first suspicion is that a mutant is the culprit.

MAGICAL ITCH: Ford can technically use his spells as often as he wants, but doing do diminishes his ability to maintain control of his Oni Form, creating something of an "itch." He can only scratch this itch by draining something of its magical or demonic/divine power, or by completely cutting physical contact with his kanabo for about 8 hours, or submitting to his urges and transforming into his True Oni State. While he itches, his kanabo lets out a low hum that only he can hear, and grows in intensity the more spells he casts.

TRUE ONI STATE: Ford's final and most dangerous state. If Ford fails to scratch his itch or casts too many spells, Ford dips into this state and fully submits to his demonic heritage. Ford's abilities are greatly amplified, but so are his hedonistic tendencies, causing him to lash out in anger, greed, lust, gluttony, and every other base impulse that crosses his mind. The only ways to bring him down from this state is to completely sever contact from his kanabo for 15 minutes, or to overindulge in his baser instincts (eg. getting black out drunk or overeating). Thankfully, in True Oni State, his kanabo loses its ability to be summoned to his side, possibly having finished its job of corrupting its owner.
