Background

Many have heard of Fenris, the wolf destined to slay Odin at the end of all things and imprisoned for the Asgardians fear of that destiny. Those legends are true. And the ones about what he will do? Those might be true too. But what happens when a monster decides to shirk his role in the grand play? When he decides he hates the hand fate has dealt him, and wants to change the game?

At length the Aesir decided they could hold him no longer and released him into exile, possibly due to a petition from one of his jailors. Wandering the cosmos alone, Fenris learned much about the workings of fate, and began to hear rumors of a hidden hand that moved it: Those Who Sit Above In Shadow.

True or not, it galvanized the wolf and he began to actively search out ways to slip Fate's threads, to nudge great events away from their ordained pattern. Eventually he found his way to Midgard, a place where a great many patterns seem to converge. There he met an old 'friend', a former jailor now exiled from Asgard as he had been. He shared what he had learned, and what he suspected but could not prove and the two hatched a plan. They would watch Midgard, they would watch the cosmos, and they would find a way to break the cycle of fate.
It has been over two thousand years since that meeting. Fenris has mostly remained on Midgard during that time with short trips to other realms for specific purposes. Short in his time frame that is. He might miss a century here or there. Now with Asgardians and heroes of legend making their (to him) recent reappearance on Midgard he wonders if Fate isn't winding up for a good old try at Ragnarok once more.

Whatever comes, the Old Wolf will be waiting for it with open jaws.

Powers

• Ur-Wolf of Legend: The legend of what Fenris is and will be is a potent thing, and Fenris can tap it for power. He can push himself up to level of physicality of an exceptional asgardian champion - 85 ton lift strength, able to shrug off vehicular grade military weapons though it might toss him around, capable of running around 200 mph for several hours, and of course a prodigious leap to go with it. Even without drawing upon the power of his legend, Fenris possesses beast-keen senses of hearing and smell. None of this comes free, however. See Fragile Illusions and Destroyer Wolf for complications and limitations.

• Protean Form: Fenris is able to appear as a human, which he does most of the time, but is also capable of being a wolf or a wolfman of various sizes. (See Fragile Illusions). His maximum size as a wolfman before he has to abandon the form is about 10 feet tall, his maximum size as a wolf (at full legend) is about twenty five at the shoulder.

• Immortal Coil: Fenris can heal wounds rather quickly if not gravely hurt. Any single injury short of a bone break heals in minutes, and anything involves internal injuries or broken bones tends to do so in day or two. Multiple grievous injuries take him longer to recover from, though, anywhere from a couple of days to a week and when he's hurt that badly he's typically locked in wolf form and unable to access his full legend.

• Way-Walker: Fenris has learned to walk the ways that connect worlds and dimensions in his exile, which is what lets him get around the cosmos. It's also handy for general long distance travel though, though if he wants to get into an area more specific than one the size of a large city, he has to know it well, and it has to be static. Way-Walking is utterly useless for getting to any place that moves.

• Primal Force: Fenris is deeply linked to natural cycles of life and death and magic, and that affinity lets hims speak to all manner of things that that his asgardian all-speak doesn't cover. So in addition to understanding spoken languages from the sentient beings of the 9 realms, Fenris can also speak to beasts, to the dead, and magical beings from other planes.

Skills

• When The Hills Were Young: Fenris has lived on Earth for a very, very long time and he's learned a lot in that time. He's learned to read and write in the primary languages of every place he's ever lived (Europe, Africa and the Americas). He has gathered an impressive collection of skills which include the basic sciences (Math, Chemistry, Biology and Physics), and a rather obscene number of trade, survival and outdoors-y skills. He is NOT conversant in newer branches of the sciences, such as highly theoretical physics, computer engineering, advanced genetic modification and similar but outside things like that he knows an awful lot about an awful lot.

• Hero of Legend: The Old Wolf has studied the fighting arts for hundreds of lifetimes. He's well capable of fighting armed or unarmed in any of his forms at the level of elite soldiers and the number of weapons he's proficient with is a little ridiculous. When he cuts loose he's capable of feats of arms worthy of a Hector or Achilles. He's most definitely not responsible for those legends, but seeing him in action might make one wonder.

• Student of the Unseen: Fenris interest in the workings of Fate have led him to study a lot about the supernatural, mostly with a focus on recognizing patterns and disrupting them. As a side benefit, he knows a lot about magic even if his only available solution to magical problems is 'chomp'.

Advantages

• Moonsilver Sliver: One of Fenris prized possessions is a silver necklace with what appears to be a chunk of raw silver on it. That shard is enchanted and can reshape itself into a blade of nearly any size and shape from dagger to great-sword. Besides that the blade has no unusual properties. It is sturdy enough to take the full force of his swing without breaking, which means it's capable of cutting through most forms of mundane material. Really dense ones might take more than one hit. Exotic materials and things specifically meant to withstand superhumanly strong beings will perform fine against it, though.

• Compound Interest: Fenris is, quite simply put, wealthy. He lives, generally, far, far, below his means but he long ago recognized the value of money in living a mortal existence and has had plenty of time to accumulate wealth. When he needs to acquire material things, provided they can be had to begin with, it's usually not a problem for him.

• Long Perspective: Living for a long time offers advantages beyond simply learning a lot of things. The perspective of a centuries old being isn't often something that people often have access to and Fenris has keen insight on the rise and fall of history and the human condition in general.

Flaws

• Dire Beast: Even when Fenris looks human he exudes an aura of wrongness and danger that tends to put people off. This is only compounded when people find out what he actually is, what the legends around him are and heaven forfend who his family is. Nothing about him inspires any kind of confidence or trust.

• Destroyer Wolf: Drawing on Fenris' legend is dangerous for a couple of reasons. First, embracing his legend makes him more like the prophesied destroyer and that includes a level of bloodlust that makes it difficult to tell friend from foe. Second, a highly destructive fight would at BEST make humanity upset with him - and they're dangerous! At worst it would draw the wrath of Asgard, which would be bad.

• Fragile Illusions: While Fenris' power doesn't actually change, the ability of his various non-native forms to contain that power is limited. Displaying feats of prowess beyond the likes of an enhanced human forces Fenris to assume either his wolf or wolf man form, which grow steadily larger as he displays more of his power. Pushing himself beyond the limits an asgardian champion forces Fenris to abandon any humanoid form entirely and simply be a wolf. A BIG wolf.

• In the System: Fenris has a legitimate mortal life, complete with drivers licenses, passports and a job. Any of this data can be used to track him if someone were to make the connection between Jeremiah Wolfson - his present alias - and his true self. And of course since he doesn't visibly age there have been a string of such identities. Anyone connecting those dots might make some uncomfortable, possibly erroneous conclusions.

• Break The Wheel: Fenris is dead convinced that Those Who Sit Above In Shadow are real and he's determined to buck his fate and shatter their hold on him if not on the cosmos in general. There is some evidence that he's onto something, as his various moves to alter the flows of fate often receive pushback that seems somehow directed. The fact that he must use his legend to fuel this effort complicates things considerably.

• Cleisiophobia: Fenris' imprisonment left a scar on his psyche and threatening to meaningfully confine him in a way he could not escape at will is a good way to turn him violent. Actually DOING that is near certain to bring on a Destroyer Wolf episode.
